"WHAT IS
CHINESE KEMPO?" * * * * * * * * * Chinese Kempo is thought to have been originally conceived as a series of healthful exercises designed to strive hand in hand with Zen Buddhism. Later in its history when, Bodhidharmas disciples displayed a dismaying tendency to be beaten and robbed by assorted brigands and bandits infesting the area, it became a true Martial art, based on the movement, both defensive and offensive, of various animals - the mythical dragon, the leopard, the tiger, the snake, the crane etc. Several of Chinese Kempos basic principles minimum expenditure of energy, diverting an attack and counter-attacking with the same hand, employing weight-shifting techniques and employing evasive maneuvers rather than meeting an attack head on are found in several related martial arts, such as different styles of karate. However, Chinese Kempo has the advantage of being the forerunner of karate; hence its stylists have had more time to refine the art to its present state of smooth efficiency. Training in Chinese Kempo involves three principal phases. Of primary importance is mental training, and all its tools - meditation, intellectual exercises, etc., which will hopefully lead to comprehension, control, relaxation, and a knowledge of effortless induction of harmony. Evolving directly from mental training is physical training which, in this case, includes basic exercises for the development of speed, flexibility, strength, suppleness, and effortless kinetic response as well as drills in the basic strikes, punches and kicks, hand and foot techniques, weight-shifting, etc. The third aspect of Chinese Kempo training is the use of weapons - the use of the bo, the nunchaku, tonfa, sai, jodo stick, kama, etc. Training in the use of weapons embodies a Chinese Kempo maxim- Fight weapons with Weapons- such training also gives the student new insights into timing, technique, placement, distance appreciation, pattern and speed.
